Premier League team prove too strong for the hosts in Saturday's finals day

Under cloudy skies last Saturday (8th September), the semi-finals and finals of the 2018 Wiltshire Wallop T20 competition were hosted by Corsham Cricket Club at their Station Road ground.

The first semi-final between Potterne and Warminster was won by Potterne despite a strong reply to their 200+ target. Neil Clark top-scored in Potterne's innings, but his efforts were matched by Tom Banton who led the Warminster reply, but which lost its way in the final quarter of the innings after matching the required rate for much of the earlier part of the innings.

Corsham Wyverns outclassed Burbage & ER in the second semi-final thanks to a superb 104 by Tom Smith who put on 124 for the fifth wicket with Tom Foley who added 41, to recover from a disastrous start that saw the home side slump to 23 for 4. This included the wicket of the in-form Charley Reed who played-on the first ball of the match. Smith's century was his first for the home team and only the second T20 century scored at Station Road. Thanks to the efforts of Smith and Foley, Corsham finished on 207 for 9.

With frugal bowling by all of Corsham's bowlers, Burbage were skittled out for just 85 in 13.1 overs, with youngsters Jack Humphreys taking four wickets, Josh Stanley and Luke Draper two each. Jon Parker completed the rout, also with two early wickets.

The final proved to be a struggle for the home team against the stronger Premier League bowling attack. Corsham's innings again got off to an inauspicious start with Mike Myatt being superbly run out at the non-striker's end by former Corsham Captain, Ashur Morrison who intercepted a searing off-drive by Charley Reed and threw down the stumps.

Corsham were soon 31 for 4 when Tom Smith holed out in the deep for just 2, and despite a spirited 41 from Charley Reed, 16 from Tom Foley and 20 not out at the end of the innings from Corey Burgess, Corsham managed just 115 for 8 in their 20 overs.

With 28 from Neil Clark, 29 not out from Tom Cullen and 30 not out from Jack Bramwell, Potterne coasted to victory in the 14th over for the loss of just three wickets. The wicket of Ashur Morrison for just one run was a small consolation for the home spectators!

In the absence of anyone from Wiltshire Cricket, Corsham Chairman, Steve Collier, presented medals to the three appointed umpires (Cledwyn Davies, David Young and Barry Aitken), and to the two teams.

Congratulations to Potterne who last won the Wallop Trophy in 2015.
