Andy Nott (Wiltshire Association of Cricket Officials - Scorer Education Officer) is planning to run an 'Introduction to Scoring' course around Jan / Feb 2024 (1 half day) and a 'Club Scorer' course in Feb / Mar 2024 (4 or 5 half days).
The Introduction to Scoring course is designed for those new to scoring or for those who have scored a bit and would like to know more about it.
This course is a single half day and covers umpire signals, how to use the scorebook, scoring symbols and how to score a match from beginning to end using coloured pens - all in just under four hours! No previous experience of scoring is necessary. This course is really designed to whet your appetite for scoring and will hopefully encourage you to go further along the scorer education journey.
The Club Scorer course teaches everything needed to score competently at club recreational and league level and is the start of the official ECB pathway that can lead to scoring in the professional game.
It teaches how to score using the traditional 'box' style scorebook and covers every aspect of scoring in the recreational game. In summary it covers all umpire signals, extras, dismissals, the result, scoring runs, timings, intervals, dead ball, last hour, follow on, the scorer education pathway and many practical scoring exercises.
The course will run over 4 or 5 half days, one session per week. At the end of the course, attendees can begin along the scorer education pathway, leading towards level 1, level 2 and potentially level 3 (enabling access to the professional game).
For the avoidance of doubt, the above courses do not currently include electronic scoring. The ECB does offer three additional modules: Linear (paper) scoring, Duckworth/Lewis/Stearn and Electronic scoring (laptop). These modules are designed to supplement the Club Scorer course and are often run in the new year prior to the beginning of the cricket season.
The Professional Discussion day mentioned is the method by which scorers can progress from education level to level. For example, Club Scorer to Level 1, Level 1 to Level 2 and Level 2 to Level 3. The way this works is that after attending a course, a scorer compiles a portfolio of scoresheets and additional material during the cricket season. This portfolio is then discussed at a Professional Discussion post season to enable progression to the next level. The Club Scorer course covers how to compile your scorer portfolio.
The courses planned will teach how to score using a traditional 'box' style scorebook. This is the type of scorebook most, if not all recreational clubs use.
For further information or to register your interest in either of the above, Andy will be delighted to hear from you. He can be contacted by email at andy@thenotts.co.uk or by phone on 07715 531476.
For those of you who are already on the scorer pathway, please email me if you are ready for a professional discussion.
